Education Programs

Lang Pioneer Village Museum offers a variety of educational programs that correspond to the curriculum as set by the Ministry of Education. Visiting classes enjoy a hands-on experience with live demonstrations and activities in a historical setting.

Please be advised that our educational programs are very popular and do fill up quickly. We recommend that you book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.   • The name of the program you are interested in
  • Three dates of choice
  • The number of  students attending the program
  • The name of the school

Program Dates Offered Age Group Description Cost*
Heritage Christmas Program November & December Grade 2/3 Rekindle the warmth and charm of a true settler Christmas with a visit to our historic village. This full-day program, runs from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and helps students work towards expectations outlined in the “Traditions & Celebrations” and “Pioneer Life” strands of the curriculum
Students will:

  • Learn about the Indigenous influence to the settlers during the first winter.
  • Tour the Village learning about the unique traditions the early settlers brought with them to this area.
  • Learn about early travel and modes of transportation, including keeping warm.
  • Spend time as a settler student and learn about some of the differences between then and now, including where classes could be held.
  • Learn about the history of Christmas cards and make your very own.
  • Finish the day warming up with a cup of hot chocolate and traditional gingerbread cookies.
$7.50 per student
Four (4) adult supervisors complimentary per class (includes teacher)

Spring School Program Tuesday after Victoria Day to summer break All grades Lang Pioneer Village Museum provides an excellent opportunity for students and teachers to experience topics that have been discussed during their classroom pioneer studies. Students can meet and observe the activities of the blacksmith, storekeeper, printer and miller. They will be welcomed into the homes and businesses of the Village by our costumed interpreters and learn about the daily activities of a pioneer family. This is a full-day program. Tours are self-guided and will take approximately four hours. $7.50 per student

All grades Step out of your modern classroom and re-create a day in a 19th-century classroom. Our 1880s classroom in the Town Hall contains 14 useable two-seater desks, slates, two blackboards, an abacus, and a hand held bell. An informative pre-visit package will assist teachers in planning their day. Please note that there must be a minimum of 15 students in order to book this program. $4 per student
Four (4) adult supervisors complimentary per class (includes teacher)
Additional adults $4 each
Guided tour available for an additional $1.50 per student and extra adult

A Victorian Schoolhouse Experience Year round

All grades Exchange your modern classroom and teacher for a 19th-century classroom experience taught by a costumed interpreter with lessons appropriate to the grade. Our 1880s classroom in the Town Hall contains 14 useable two-seater desks, slates, two blackboards, an abacus, and a hand held bell. An informative pre-visit package will assist teachers in planning their day. A guided tour of the Village is included, however, access into the buildings is not available during the winter months. The program runs from 10 am to 2 pm. $7.50 per student

* Your school will be invoiced for your chosen program at the time of confirmation of your booking (inclusive of number of teachers, students and support persons). The invoice is PAYABLE BY CHEQUE ONLY upon your arrival at Lang Pioneer Village Museum for the program.  All cheques are payable to:  The Corporation of the County of Peterborough. Please note that upon issue of the invoice your numbers cannot be decreased, and you are responsible for payment of the amount indicated on the invoice. If you want to increase the number of students or volunteers, however, you may contact Lang Pioneer Village Museum to see if this is possible but this must be done in advance.
