Each day at Lang Pioneer Village is filled with a variety of activities for the visitor to enjoy and take part in. Interpreters demonstrate the many trades and domestic duties of early pioneer life. From blacksmithing at an antique forge to sewing on a hand-cranked sewing machine, the Village provides a host of opportunities for learning. SUNDAY - Heritage Traditions and Celebrations The way that we celebrate holidays and special occasions today is very different from those of the 19th-century! On Sundays, learn all about the traditions and celebrations of the pioneers. MONDAY - Bygone Chores Join us on Mondays to experience what it would be like to cook and clean for a large family during the 19th century. With few stores nearby and even fewer cleaning supplies available to buy, the pioneers had to clean their homes and businesses the old fashion way -with a lot of elbow grease! Come take part in the mending, washing, mowing, cooking, dusting and other chores necessary to keep one's home and family presentable. TUESDAY - Waste Not, Want not Shirts worn a little thin? Don't throw them out! Use them to create beautiful rugs for your home like a pioneer would have. Cutting an onion? Don't compost the peel, it can be used to make dye for wool. Visit Lang on Tuesday to see the villagers demonstrate how to reuse and recycle materials in inventive ways. Learn something new and try it yourself at home. WEDNESDAY - Fireside Fare With no corner store to run out to, the pioneers not only had to cook their own food but they had to produce it as well. Hours would be spent caring for the family's garden, hunting, preparing food and then cooking over a wood fire. Meals could take hours to make and the diet would be very limited depending on the time of year. Join us Wednesdays to get a taste of a pioneer's daily life. THURSDAY - Pleasures & Pastimes During the 19th-century life was full of trials and hardships. Pleasure was taken in the simple things like playing a homemade game, decorating everyday objects or cooking a special treat. Come visit Lang to compare the lives of the first Europeans who came to Peterborough County in the 1820's with those who lived 60 years later and had idle time to indulge themselves in Victorian hobbies. FRIDAY - Village Connections Come a little closer and I'll tell you what I have heard. Well, I was at the General Store, you know, at Lang Pioneer Village, and apparently on Fridays they are going to talk about communication. Can you believe that? There will be demonstrations on the printing press, you can learn how a local post office worked and hear what would have been written in letters at the time. Now, I'm not one to gossip but, if I were you, I would visit the homes and businesses at Lang to learn all the news in the Village. SATURDAY - Bygone Chores Join us on Saturdays to experience what it would be like to cook and clean for a large family during the 19th century.
